Through the Tunnel
While walking along the pathway of life
We came up to a tunnel dark as moonless night
The desire to avoid it was strong as strong could be
But the only other direction was right behind me
Turning back was not an option, so we had to go through
Trembling we entered, just me and you
But in that gloomy darkness each seemed alone
By the world and by our selves no longer known
Driven apart by the depths of the dark
No longer joined in hand or in heart
I in my corner, and you in yours
Not sure how to see each other anymore
But slowly, so slowly, beginning to move ahead
Though at times almost crippled by a nameless dread
Stumbling along just trying to find a way
Longing for nothing more than the sunshine of day
And so we learned step by step how to walk again
Creeping through the tunnel that seemed to have no end
Sometimes one step forward, sometimes two steps back
Meeting deadly obstacles that seemed to never slack
Some days it seemed I saw a glimmer of light
Only to find it thwarted and swallowed by the night
But then finally quite suddenly the sun was in our eyes
And I looked down to see your hand entwined with mine
Somehow in the darkness where neither of us could see
Jesus walked beside you as He was walking with me
Leading us to the place of togetherness again
By first teaching us how to walk with only Him
He sees us as ourselves and He sees us as one
And He’s brought us together to see His work be done
Somehow that dark tunnel where we both felt alone
Was used to make us stronger than each could be on our own
